Polar Bears, Penguins, and Other Mysterious Animals of the Extreme Cold

The Arctic and Antarctica are two of the most extreme environments in the world. They are freezing cold, wind-blown, lip-cracking dry, and pitch-black for half of the year, but despite these extreme conditions, many magnificent animals call these icy worlds home. Scientists have been amazed and curious about how animals survive in such extremely cold places with limited food. To find out, they have been traveling to the icy worlds to study these extreme animals. Their hard work has revealed incredible findings.

The opening of chapter one describes the Arctic and Antarctic as freezing cold, frostbite windy, lip-cracking dry, and pitch-black for half of the year where many magnificent animals call these icy worlds home. The closing sentence tells the reader the Arctic polar bear and the Antarctic emperor penguin have adapted and show us that life will find a way to survive even in the most extreme places on Earth. Between these opening and closing sentences, this beautifully written description of these little known and seldom visited regions sings with information about polar bears and penguins and how they, and similar living creatures, adapt to extreme weather conditions. Chapters are divided almost equally between polar bear and emperor penguin and include information on how each anima, evolved (from a land-living brown bear to a water-loving polar bear and from a diving albatross or petrel to a land-loving emperor penguin). Sidebars emphasize little-known facts (e.g., Antarctica is the highest continent. It rises 1.4 miles above the sea). Backmatter includes a hands-on activity, extensive chapter notes, glossary, books and websites for additional information, and an index.
